As AI systems become increasingly embedded in everyday work, from generative design tools to sensor-based workplace analytics, office environments are shifting toward higher levels of continuous optimisation.
Spatial planning and layout decisions are now shaped through real-time data, making work more distributed and computationally mediated. Yet this acceleration of optimisation generates a counter-movement. Physical environments are being revalued not as performance-driven machines, but as essential settings for embodied human experience.
Within this context, two spatial archetypes are re-emerging.
The first is the Hearth, a space centred on gathering, informal interaction, and shared presence. Historically rooted in people gathering around fire, it is expressed in contemporary workplaces as communal environments that enable spontaneous exchange, social energy, and collective belonging. It provides the physical co-presence required for trust and empathy, which cannot be generated through optimisation alone.
The second archetype is the Cave, a spatial condition oriented toward withdrawal, focus, and sensory reduction. As digital contexts become increasingly noisy, these enclosed low-stimulus environments support concentration and cognitive clarity.
Between these two archetypes lies a fundamental tension shaping the future workplace: the need for both connection and isolation, social engagement and introspective depth. As AI continues to optimise work systems at scale, workplace design is shifting its role. Rather than producing fully optimised systems, it is increasingly asked to restore embodied experience through tactility, material presence, and spatial atmosphere.
Ultimately, the most relevant workplaces are those that allow people to feel, gather, withdraw, and reconnect with physical presence.
